The Mats and Divide by Two
Both stories showed the attitude and traits of the Filipinos. For me, Divide by Two is more realistic because Filipino’s are very into their neighbors. They gossip and talk about them just for the fun of it. Some neighbors also compete with each other regarding who has a better front yard or who has a prettier Christmas tree. I think it’s stupid and insane. Only children can get away with this, housewives and their husbands should mind their own business and go on with their lives. If ever both parties have a misunderstanding, it’s better to solve a problem in a mature manner.
The representation of the characters in both stories is well written. All families are dysfunctional, we have to admit. I think it’s healthy for a family to have disagreements because it helps the family stronger and well banded. In The Mats the author wrote about a Filipino father who is strict and cold. The representation is realistic because the man of the house will never show his emotions. His aura should always be strong to show that he can solve family problems.
I think that the modern Filipinos are less conservative. They are ready to take risks and enjoy the obstacles behind it. We are now living in a fast-paced world; everyone is always on the go. The women of our country are now becoming strong individuals who doesn’t need a man to push them to the top. The “maria clara” days are over. And for the men, they are not ashamed in showing their emotions. Showing vulnerability makes them more real and true. Everyone now is equal, and everybody gives a chance to others to achieve their goals.

-i agree. Pinoys have been liberated. Maybe because pinoys are aiming of being a state of America (that's another issue).
yes we are less conservative. coz we like adventure. we like challenges. we always want something new. go lang ng go! haha
The mats has just too much drama at the end that I think made it seem unreal. However, the text shows Philippine tradition which is bringing a pasalubong to our loved ones.
Divide by two on the other hand seems to be a possible scenario in a given relationship. However, it's the way the writer conveyed his story that made it sound fiction.
yep. we are already alienated!!!
(hide under your mom's undies!) haha
kidding. pero alam naman nting naimpluwensyahan na tayo ng mga mapuputi at ingliserong tao(kano) kaya di na rin ako magtataka kung bakit unti-unti ng nagiging liberated ang mga tao.
